Basso’s Beat: The Farve Factor

So Brett Farve wants to play again. Its decision time for the Packers. By all accounts he wants to play but has personally denied the rumor, although it hasn’t stopped his family from saying as much. You get the impression from them that the Packers aren’t all that interested in Favre and want to begin the Aaron Rodgers era.
Let’s look at any team that may be interested in a Hall of Fame Quarterback who may only play one or two more years. They would have to be on the cusp of a Championship season, with a strong supporting cast of players and an unproven quarterback at the helm. They would have to be willing to give up a draft pick to get him. Farve would only want to go to a team in contention at this point in his career.
Minnesota Vikings have a great running attack. Brought in Bernard Berrian to help out the passing game and Jared Allen is going to have a huge impact on defense. Young quarterback in Tavaris Jackson is the big question mark. Looks like a no brainer for the Vikes, problem is they are in the same division as the Packers.
We could go team by team in trying to find a fit for Favre and unless the guy is a Pro Bowler at the helm most teams would have him. But really the best place for Favre, if he wants to play is right in
On the fantasy perspective,

Wisconsin needs to settle down, the Brett Farve show needs to remain part of history. He is a competitor and probably feeling much better today than in late January, but his time is now past. Aaron Rodgers needs the opportunity to take over the Pack at a time when they are primed to play great football.
give him the opportunity to guide a team that was a game away from the Super bowl, with the talent to allow him to step in for a NFL legend. History has shown us how difficult it is to follow a Hall of Famer (see: Richard Todd, Jay Fiedler, Jeff Hostetler, etc.) and the only chance Rodgers has of surviving is with a talented team. He already has one strike against him playing in a land where the NFL is a religion and Brett Farve is their deity.
Following a legend can be beyond tough, and dark humor can sometimes be the only way to survive. When Cliff Stoudt had to follow Terry Bradshaw as the man in Pittsburgh he made the statement ” I tried to commit suicide, but the bullet was intercepted.” Let’s hope things shine brighter for Rodgers. But if history remains true Fantasy players make him your Number 2 QB at best.
